Foley & Uncle Tom Republicans

Initially, even I was sceptical of the attacks on Mark Foley, not because I like the man, but because I didn't see how asking a 16 year old congressional page for his picture made someone a "pedophile." But after seeing the more explicit emails and Instand Messages, he clearly went over the line of acceptable behavior, even if he is not technically a "pedophile" (sexual attraction toward pre-pubescent children).

Now Mark Foley "comes out" and says he is gay, and that he was molested as a child. Just what we need, another repressed homosexual Republican who decides to accept being gay after he is caught acting just like all those stereotypes the anti-gay religious right, the base of the Republican Party, pushes about gay men. The Family Research Council has already sent a press release blaming the Foley Scandal on "political correctness" that keeps society from treating every gay man as a pedophile who preys on children.

I'm not sure about Foley's record on supporting gay rights, but I imagine he was on the side of the ant-gay Republican Right most of the time. I call anti-gay conservative Republican homosexuals "Uncle Tom Republicans." Foley is now in the same club as James West (the anti-gay homosexual mayor of Spokane), Jeff Gannon (the the right-wing "journalist" and part-time gay hustler), Matt Drudge, Andrew Sullivan, and all the other "gay" Republicans who support an anti-gay party and who care more about getting capital gains tax cuts and nationalistic militarism than they do about the civil rights of their own "community." (and I have my suspicions of Glenn Beck, the new right-wing talking head on CNN.)

So, now I have no sympathay for Mark Foley or any other Uncle Tom Republican. Talk about "sick"...

Check the FRC press release I just posted in the Bugle. If this makes you sick, that will make you sicker.

I would not be shocked if Sean Hannity turned out to be homosexual

Jim, can you elaborate on what you think is the deal with closeted gays? There is no such thing as a closeted hetero, because heteros don't have to deal with discrimination. I have no basis for comparison from my own experience.

Can you help me understand why closeted gays seem to act out like this? Why do the biggest homophobes and the biggest anti-gay crusaders turn out to be gay themselves? Are these closeted anti-gay crusaders actually the biggest victims of all? Help me out here.

Get this: Foley voted for the Marriage Amendment, but otherwise he has an outstanding record on gay rights, and actually got an endorsement from the Log Cabin Republicans.

Unlisted, why do you use a photo of the Lebanese beauty queen Haifa as your profile picture?

Auto..
thanks for the info... I'm surprised he had a decent record on gay rights, but even it he did not, I wouldn't be surprised if the Uncle Tom.. I mean Log Cabin... Republicans endorsed him...

What about these right-wing closeted homosexuals? I don't have an answer for you, becuase I don't understand them either... Andrew Sullivan says it is because of internalized homophobia, etc... He's a conservative CATHOLIC! I don't understand how any gay person could be Republican or Catholic!

So I'm with you, I don't understand them either..
I was once on a "blind date" with a gay LIBERTARIAN, who actually opposed any "gay rights" laws because he thought businesses should be able to hire or fire whoever they wanted and the government shouldn't interfere with "the market."... You should have been a fly on the table in that restaurant and heard my scream!

I think I've met that guy... Okay, just kidding. There are more of those types out there than you'd think.

Ideology always trumps nature. It's part of what makes us human beings. Humans have the ability to deny their sex or their food, but in each case, sometimes the results are difficult of explanation.

I don't think his behavior is necessarily atributable to his being gay, closeted or otherwise. I think he solicited boys (instead of girls) simply because he was gay. (But his behavior would have been just as wrong either way.)

The fact that his sexuality (gay or straight) was repressed may have been a contributing factor as to why he preferred children to adults. That is to say, he may indeed have been physically attracted to them, but he may also have been more comfortable with them because they were very young and he felt more powerful that way.

His need to be closeted is difficult to understand, though. Washington is a gay-friendly town. He could easily have found friendly, youthful-looking partners in any number of gay clubs and bars in that town, and still kept it quiet as far as his constituents were concerned.

Of course, his being Republican may explain everything.

Dobson and other right-wing Christians would like to claim a direct corelation between being gay and a preference for children, but I don't think a direct relationship can be proven so easily. There are many indirect factors. For example, boys are more often sexually aware and adventuresome. Or, predators may find it easier to rationalize and justify their behavior with boys as objects (hey, he's a guy and can stick up for himself). Or, they may feel it less risky -- boys won't tell for fear of bringing ridicule on themselves.

So, even if there is a statistical "overlap" (as the FRC puts it), that alone doesn't prove anything, IMO.

According to a WP article on MSNBC.com Foley has a long-time "companion" who, while not named, is referred to as a "Palm Beach doctor"...and they apparently were well-known as a couple in Fla. Not so "closeted" after all - just not OUT out.

This is why I was concerned about the Democrats/Progressives making so much noise accusing Foley of "pedophilia".. I am afraid the Left has played into the anti-gay right's trap of linking "pedophilia" with gays. What Foley did was reprehensible and unethical, but it is NOT pedophilia, furthermore, accorinding to D.C. law 16 is the age of consent... not to excuse what Foley did, but the focus of the Democrats/Progressive should NOT have been on pedophilia.. now that he is "come out" as a gay man, eveyone is now linking pedophilia with a gays again...

Of course, I was almost hung from a tree for trying to make this point, and it is a difficult argument to make without being misunderstood as supporting "pedophilia", which I do not.
There is a difference between relationships with pre-adolescent children and 16-18 year old "teenagers," from a "scientific" view point, but morally and politically there is not much difference.

The correct term, as I noted, is ephebophilic. The whole problem is that he used his position of power to try and pick up these teenagers.

That's predatory behavior, regardless of age or gender orientation.

Autocrat asked earlier if I could explain these closeted conservative gay Republicans and I couldn't, but a good book to read about this aspect of the Republican Right is David Brock's page-turner BLINDED BY THE RIGHT: THE CONSCIENCE OF AN EX-CONSERVATIVE, which includes some salacious stories of partying with a drunk Ann Coulter crawling around on the floors of gay bars in D.C.

(David Brock was a closeted gay conservative and is now an out gay liberal with mediamatters.org)

The best explanation is that the Republican Party does not openly accept gays in the party and conservative gays are forced to stay in the closet...
Wait until "The List" of gay staffers is "leaked" to blame the Foley scandal on..
